Searching everything

Search in Tandem App looks through messages, tasks and files in one go. You can type plain words, narrow things down with filters typed straight into the box, or use the Filters panel if you'd rather pick from menus. This guide covers both, with examples you can copy.

What search covers

Messages in the channels, direct messages and group messages you can open, including thread replies.
Tasks, by title, description and comments.
Files, both those in a channel's Docs and those attached to messages, by name.

You only ever see results from conversations you can open right now. A guest's results come only from the channels they've been added to.

A basic search

Click Search in the sidebar.
Type at least two characters, such as invoice or launch plan.
Press Enter. Results are grouped into Messages, Tasks and Files, most recent first.

Click a message result to jump to it in its conversation.

Filters you can type

Add any of these to your search words. You can combine several.

from:@Maya — written by a particular person. For a full name, use quotes: from:"Maya Patel".
in:#marketing — in one channel.
before:2026-10-01 — before that day began.
after:2026-09-01 — from the day after that date onwards.
on:2026-09-15 — on that day only.
has:file, has:link, has:pin — messages with a file, a link, or that have been pinned.
is:thread — messages that are part of a thread.

Dates are written as year-month-day and are days in your own time zone. The has: and is: filters only apply to messages, so tasks and files are left out of those results. If a filter doesn't make sense, for example a name nobody has, search tells you rather than quietly returning nothing.

Examples

contract has:file in:#client-acme — the contract someone attached in the client's channel.
from:@Sam has:link after:2026-09-01 — links Sam has shared since the start of September.
deadline has:pin — pinned messages that mention the deadline.
is:thread in:#help printer — threads in the help channel about the printer.

The Filters panel

Click Filters under the search box to choose the same things from menus:

From — Anyone, or a person.
In — Anywhere, or a channel or conversation.
From date and To date — both days are included.
Messages that have — a file, a link, or been pinned.

Other ways to find things

Ctrl/⌘ + K jumps straight to a channel, conversation or person by name.
The Threads page lists threads you follow.
Saved and later keeps messages you've saved. See reminders, saved messages and scheduled messages.

Search is also available through the API, with the same filters.
