Every channel in Tandem App has its own task list, on the channel's Tasks tab. Because tasks sit next to the conversation, the discussion about a piece of work and the work itself stay together. This guide covers creating tasks, the board and list views, and keeping tasks up to date.

Creating a task

  1. Open the channel and click the Tasks tab.
  2. Click New task.
  3. Give it a Title, and add a Description if it needs more detail.
  4. Choose who it's Assigned to. You can pick anyone active in the channel, or leave it as Nobody yet.
  5. Set a Due date, a Priority (Low, Normal, High or Urgent) and any Labels, separated by commas, for example design, client, q4.
  6. Click Create task.

A short line appears in the channel's chat saying a task was created, so everyone knows. The person you assign it to is notified.

Board and List

The Tasks tab has two views. Switch between them with Board and List at the top.

  • Board shows three columns: To do, In progress and Done. Drag a card to another column to change its status. On a touch screen, open the task and change its status there. Cards show the assignee, due date, priority, labels, checklist progress and number of comments.
  • List shows the same tasks as a table with Task, Status, Assigned to, Due and Priority columns, which is easier to scan when there are many.

Filtering

Use the filters above the tasks to narrow them down:

  • Assigned to — Anyone, Assigned to me, Unassigned, or a particular person.
  • Label — Any label, or one label.

Click Filter to apply them and Clear to go back to everything.

Working on a task

Click a task to open it. From there you can:

  • Edit task to change any of its details, then Save task.
  • Build a checklist: add items with New checklist item and tick them off as you go. The task shows how many are done.
  • Add a comment to ask a question or post an update. The task's assignee and the person who created it are notified of new comments, and you can @mention anyone else who should see one.
  • Delete the task, if you created it or you're an owner or admin.

Changes of status are noted in the channel's chat: when a task is moved, completed or reopened, a short line says so.

Who can do what

  • Owners, admins and members can create, edit and move tasks in channels they're in.
  • Guests with Full access can do the same. Guests with Chat only can view tasks and comment. Guests with Read only can view tasks.
  • When a channel is archived, its tasks can't be changed.

Keeping on top of your own tasks

  • Home lists your open tasks across every channel.
  • Search finds tasks by title, description and comments.
  • Use the Assigned to me filter in each channel for a focused view.

Most tasks start life as a chat message. See turning messages into tasks to make one in a click. Recurring tasks can be created automatically by a workflow: see automating routine messages with workflows.
